All web sites need a "host"... or "server" where they reside and people from around the world can access your pages via numerous high-speed modems. Generally a business will have choices as to where to place its web site.
-- Your ISP may provide you with a storage area where your web site can be hosted free of charge. This sounds great, but there are some disadvantages. If your web site is hosted on the same server machines that also provide internet access for hundreds (or thousands) of dial-up customers, your site will often come up slowly or, ocassionally, not at all. Your web site address may also be tied to your ISP. If at some future date you decide you want to change ISPs, your web site will also have to move, and your web address change. All the work you did in promoting that address is now down the drain. Free web site addresses are usually somewhat cryptic... such as: "www.some-isp.com/~your-login-name" The ~ (tilde) character is particularly annoying, but is often required with free web site hosting. Free hosting servers are invariably very slow, and many require for you to allow advertising banners to be displayed upon your site.
